"ZIPoPo in Prison"

Lessons for Imprisoned Youth, Russia, 2001-2015

For over ten years ZIPoPo was used as an effective educational tool in the Kazan Youth Penitentiary and received recognition of the administration of the facility and the State Department for Punishments of the Republic of Tatarstan. Adolescent offenders with genuine interest watched the ZIPoPo scenes that were played for them by the volunteers – the students of Kazan universities, and actively participated in the discussion around possible variants of solutions to difficult life situations. Many of them noted that for the first time in their lives they had a chance to analyze their actions and think about the consequences of these actions. According to questionnaire, ZIPoPo lessons helped youth stay away from dangerous activities that may lead to crimes. ZIPoPo activists Ildus Ziapparov and Asiya Bakirova were appointed the members of the Public Board of the State Department for Punishments of the Republic of Tatarstan. They have been practicing ZIPoPo in the Kazan Youth Penitentiary and in the women's prison in the Republic of Chuvashia.
