"Theatre Forum in Sudan"
Moral Rejuvenation for Youth of Sudan, 2012
Project was organized by UNICEF and local non-profit organization HelaHelp
with the objective of creating social spaces where young Sudanese can discuss
constructive problem-solving strategies, in order to create
ethically-based approaches of conflict resolution together with the audience.
The methodology has been introduced to 105 Sudanese professionals, mostly teachers
and actors from Kassala, West Darfur, South Darfur, Gezira State and Khartoum.
Over 500 performances were attended by almost 33,000 adolescents and youth, both
male and female, in urban neighborhoods of South Darfur, West Darfur and
Kassala, and were involved in discussions in a captivating and entertaining way
of some real-life issues of Early Marriage, School Health, Female Genitals Mutilation,
Tribal Conflicts, Drug Addiction, HIV/AIDS, and Education of Girls. The program was recognized and highly appreciated by the Ministry of Education of Sudan. Beyond anticipating that ZIPoPo
will become a feature of Sudanese popular theatre culture, the methodology has
proven to be a useful and time-proven instrument for communicating
issues of emotional value in a way that sparks discussions and raises
consciousness.
